My work The Suburban Sound, is a study of suburban life in Penryn, an ancient town in Cornwall. Photographed in black and white film, my images depict British vernacular architecture through bungalows and pebbledash housing.
Sequestered neighbourhoods are captured people-less, deliberately leading one’s focus to the minute details that might convey individual personalities against a typically featureless sky. Within these moments of isolation, the images make you think about the reality of the individual that lives there. We wonder what kind of scenario could be occurring within the confined walls of a home. Half drawn curtains offer glimpses of private domesticity, whilst fully rolled up garage shutters expose life’s monotonous banality in plain sight. Crenelated hedges and forecourts planted with imported palm trees speak to uneasy dualities between the local and the global.
